Museum Hosts Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours, Thursday 15 January, 2009

The Cayman Islands National Museum successfully hosted a Business after Hours event, where over two hundred guests were treated to a free historical building tour of it’s newly restored home in George Town, Harbour Drive.

This event was certainly a celebration of excellence. Guided Tours were the hit of the night with guests willing to wait in line for a chance to view the refurbished building and to learn about it’s history. What was most gratifying was that this information was being relayed to the public through the voices of young Caymanians; well versed on their history and enthused about the role they played that night. Haley Powell, a guide and senior student at John Gray High School said, “Wow, now I am a part of history too.”

Guests were treated to a look into the future through renderings of the upcoming permanent exhibits scheduled for installation in early 2009. They learned that what used to be the first Government vault will now house the Object Theatre where visitors to the Museum will receive a warm welcome from a Caymanian elder speaking out through a traditional half door, that Cayman’s first Court Room will again serve as the Cultural History Gallery featuring social history of the 1950’s, and that the Museum Gift Shop is now located in what was Cayman’s first post office.

Most popular for the evening was the “Old Goal”, a rock wall structure where recently discovered graphic writings are now under archaeological investigation. There is a lot of discovery to be made here; truly we are living in an exciting time in this country.
