Our Collections
The Museum Law of 1979 mandates the museum to collect "historical, natural and scientific objects of interest..."
Today, the Museum boasts a collection 8,000 plus objects.
The Natural History Collection specimens have their roots in the 1930’s from the original Ira Thompson Collection, and some are new acquisitions and discoveries. There are fossils from the sea which were discovered on land, forms of land-life retrieved from the sea and everything in between.

The Art Collection is our islands' largest comprehensive collection of Caymanian arts and crafts.
The Cultural History Collection offers tangible evidence of our social development. It includes objects such as shipbuilding tools and equipment, cannons, writing implements, furniture and, hats. Additionally, the collection comprises archaeologically recovered items both terrestial and nautical.
Come inside our virtual collection and look around.

History
The Museum Shop was the First Post Office. Commissioner Fredrick Sanguinetti’s term of office is marked by the development of the Post Office and postal facilities. Established in 1890, the post office in George Post was housed here until a new facility was built in central George Town. This small office held fewer than 10 postal boxes, for most mail was distributed to the public by hand. Prior to this we had to rely on mail services on seamen and friends in Jamaica.
