Transfer print ware
The most recognizable ceramics of the 19th century, transferware was mass-produced in England and imported throughout the Caribbean. While early designs appeared only in blue, the mid-19th century saw the development of new colors and a vast range of patterns. This decorative technique remained popular between the late 18th to mid-20th centuries.
Who would have owned it: While it primarily appeared in the homes of wealthy slaveowners, transfer print ware was also highly valued by enslaved and freed people. Blue and white styles were preferred by settles for their more ‘European’ appearance while enslaved and freed people tended to purchase the colorful polychrome styles.
